A place to work, dream and gather together.

Family and friends are part of what makes Shadow Wood tick. We love sharing our passion for alpacas and appreciate the support we receive in return.

We are Grant and Frith, we’ve been learning about farming and breeding alpacas for the last 8+ years. It has been a wonderful journey and we’ve been lucky enough to make lifelong friends along the way. We specialise in the rare and elegant Suri alpaca. We have a strong focus on producing beautiful black suri but also love the other fabulous rich colours that are part of the genetic mix of our herd. At Shadow Wood we have a carefully considered breeding program in progress, every year we evaluate the latest cria and analyse our herd improvements to ensure we’re taking the best possible steps forward.

Shadow Wood farm is situated in the peaceful Maramarua Forest area; it consists of just over 70 acres of secure pasture with a backdrop of forest and farmland. We have developed purpose-built yards, isolation paddocks and handling facilities. All adult alpaca are TB tested annually to ensure we have a TB free herd. Fleece samples are taken from our breeding and production animals and tested each year by Australian Alpaca Fibre Testing. And to keep the paperwork in order we keep careful records using ‘Alpaca Manager’.

Throughout the year Shadow Wood is open to the public by appointment, let us know if you would like to pop by to see the animals and the beautiful fibre they produce. Our goal is to breed for luxurious fibre from animals with sound conformation, improving with each generation.

There is increasing demand in the fibre from alpacas and we are excited to see the growing interest in the exquisite natural black suri fibre. We are determined to bring constant improvement to our herd and it is this challenge that keeps us pursuing excellence. The exciting potential for genetic improvement combined with emerging commercial demand makes black suri an obvious specialisation for us at Shadow Wood.
